Are you a fan of underwear? Most people wear it every day, and a lot of us never give much thought to it’s fashion status. Even for men the options have become limitless in recent years. Sometimes I’m amazed, and sometimes I’m scared of the options that are available. Though I’m a boxer briefs sort of guy, I can certainly appreciate some of the more modern underwear designs.
Last week, I was invited to be a pattern tester for some underwear. No, not the kind that you can wear, but a paper piecing quilt block that features men’s underwear. Jan Briggs had an awesome idea when he created is “Under-Ruse” block, and from the moment he introduced it, I was throttled! I had never really given though to creating blocks based on clothing, but this kick-started something creative in me. I want a quilt of nothing but men-inspired clothing pieces and accessories. There are, of course, other more sinister plans bouncing around in my noggin.
When Jan asked me to test his pattern, I was elated. I’ve been itching to use this purple and pink print in something awesome, and this block was just the thing. I love how it turned out. The pattern, despite having quite a few small pieces to sew, was easy to follow, and actually included directions for cutting each piece so as to not waste much material (something I greatly appreciated). It is assembled in 4 pieces, which makes it easy to handle, yet quick to come together.
I’m really excited with how this turned out. I hope that Jan creates more patterns in this line. If you’d like to download the pattern and try it for yourself, it’s available on the Quilting Among the Grooves blog, under this post. You can also see Jan and some of his quilting works, including his own rendition of this block, on Instagram.
